Internet Giant Will Bring 2,000 Jobs to Former Randall Park Mall Site
In a major win for our region, Amazon, the internet-based retail giant, recently announced its plans to bring 2,000 jobs to Northeast Ohio. The company will add the jobs over the next three years, transforming the vacant Randall Park Mall into a hub of activity once again.
With fulfillment and distribution sites across the nation, Amazon’s Northeast Ohio location is unique as the company will redevelop the abandoned Randall Park Shopping Mall into an 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center. The project will leverage the existing transportation and utility infrastructure and be a catalyst to help transform the Village of North Randall and the surrounding community’s economy. This is the first time Amazon has repurposed a mall site to serve customer orders. The company chose North Randall because of the potential adaptive reuse of the abandoned mall, the distribution capability and access to a sizeable workforce.
Shutting its doors in 2009, Randall Park Mall was once the largest shopping center in the world. Now, with Amazon’s investment, the site will once again be bustling with activity. In a press release from Amazon, Village of North Randall Mayor David Smith stated:
“Words cannot begin to express what Amazon’s commitment to the development of its fulfillment center means for the Village of North Randall. This is a generational project that not only redefines the future of our community but the future of more than 2,000 Cuyahoga County residents who will be employed at the facility.”
According to Amazon, the company offers its full-time employees “…highly-competitive pay, health insurance, disability insurance, retirement savings plans and company stock starting on day one.” In addition, Amazon offers up to 20 weeks of paid leave and innovative benefits that provide flexibility to new parents. Amazon plans to advertise open position six to 10 weeks before the facility opens. The site should be fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2018.
A local and regional team from the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Village of North Randall, the Port of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, the Ohio Department of Transportation, JobsOhio and Team NEO worked together to provide the business case for the highly competitive project.
